About the Thematic Alphabet Book
Sample document, instructions, and caveats
Letter ordering seem odd? Word choices got you wondering? Find the answers to these and other questions in this documentation.
At a Glance — Key things to know
They follow the order they appear in the generated story — this is by design.
Space, animals, science all work great. Fictional stories (eg: "once upon a time ...") will be written in a somewhat dry style.
Pokemon, Bluey, etc. are AI-generated interpretations — they may or may not match official designs.
When a theme-specific word can't be found, the system renders just the letter at the top and its bubble-font "illustration".

Expand this section for a walk-through of the sample PDF, illustrating the colouring book's structure and potential quirks.
Sheet 3 (colouring pages): Sheet 3 shows a typical colouring page layout: page 1 is on the right, and page 2 is on the left — a simple sequential layout. Each sheet pairs two consecutive pages.
Letter Ordering (colouring pages): The letters and their associated vocabulary are ordered based on their appearance in the story that will be printed on Sheet 2 of the book. They are not ordered alphabetically. This way, you can read the story with your child while looking at the images!
Sound & Image Association: Each colouring page focuses on a specific letter sound. Children will colour an image related to a word that reinforces that sound. While we prefer to choose words beginning with the sound, sometimes we cannot find them. In such cases, we choose words where the target sound is at the end of the word. On rare occasions, a suitable word simply can't be found for a letter. In these cases, we will still include a colouring page for that letter, to keep the alphabet complete.
"Fallback" Words Happen: Sometimes, our system will use common words when theme-specific ones aren't available. See How It Works for details.
English/Gibberish Creep: Sometimes, gibberish or English text might get past our checks and into an image (eg: Sheet 3, left panel). This is something we're actively working on eradicating.
Spot the Oops! Our AI is a creative beast, but sometimes it gets its wires crossed. Expect the unexpected – maybe a dinosaur sprouts an extra leg, a knight is rocking shorts, or penguins end up in the Sahara. These quirky errors can be hilarious teaching moments! Spot the mistake with your child, talk about why it's funny, maybe colour over the errors. But remember, while silliness is encouraged, inappropriate content isn't. Always review your creations before letting your child loose with the crayons!
Instructions
- 🎨 Generate the Colouring Book: Navigate to the Colouring Book Tool Page,
fill out the form, and click "Generate".
The generation process takes 5 to 15 minutes. You can download the finished product from the confirmation page if you remain on the page, or from the "Tool Usage" section of your My Account page. - ️ Print the Book: Print the entire colouring book.
- ✂️ Cut: Carefully cut the pages in half along the dotted line drawn down the middle of the sheets.
- 👀 Review and Remove Unwanted Pages: Carefully review all the pages and remove any pages you deem unsuitable for your child.
Please email heretohelp@linguwhee.com with the problematic pages and a description of the issue. Your feedback helps us improve the quality of the generated content. - 📚 Assemble the Book: Order your pages in whatever order you like. We have a suggestion below.
- 📎 Bind (optional): Use a heavy-duty stapler to staple the book. For easy page turning, staple in the corner. Alternatively, use a paper perforator and bind with rings/in a binder.
- 🎉 Present the Colouring Book: Share the colouring book with your child! Read and discuss the story, colour the images, trace the letters, and practice the sounds.
Detailed cutting & assembly instructions — optional
Each printed sheet contains two consecutive colouring pages side by side (e.g. page 1 on the right and page 2 on the left of sheet 3).
Simply cut each sheet along the dotted centre line and the pages will already be in order — no special stacking required.
- ✂️ Prepare the Cover and Parent Guide: Remove the first two sheets (cover and parent guide). On the cover sheet: the left side of the page is the back cover, while the right side is the front cover. On the parent guide sheet: the left side of the page shows the story while the right side shows word examples that are not found in the story. Cut these sheets along the cutting guide lines.
- 📄 Cut the Colouring Pages: Cut each sheet in half along the dotted centre line.
Each cut gives you two consecutive pages — the right half is the lower-numbered page, the left half is the next page.
For example, sheet 3 gives you page 1 (right half) and page 2 (left half), sheet 4 gives you page 3 and page 4, and so on.
In case of mix-ups: use the small numbers printed in the bottom corner of each page to re-order them. - 📚 Assemble the Book: Place the front cover on the front, next place the sheets with the parent story and examples, then the colouring pages in order, and finally the back cover on the back.
How It Works & What to Expect
Word Choice Quirks: Sometimes, the word assigned to a letter might seem a bit unexpected. For example, if you create a dinosaur colouring book in Romanian, you might expect "brahiozaur" (brachiosaurus) for 'b', but instead get "bună" (hello). This can happen if the story doesn't mention brachiosaurs specifically, and opens with a greeting like "Bună copii!" ("Hello kids!"). The system will then use common words from the story when no other word is found. We're actively working on improving the word selection process to ensure more relevant and engaging vocabulary.
Fictional Characters & Themes: Works best with factual or STEM themes. Fictional characters (eg: Pokemon, Bluey etc) are AI-generated interpretations — they may not look exactly like the originals.
Concept Levels and Rich Vocabulary: We're passionate about rich vocabulary, even for the youngest learners! Your "Concept Level" choice dictates the range/depth of concepts in your book. It does not directly influence the vocabulary complexity. When we generate our story and pick our words, we strive to use rich vocabulary regardless of concept level. Please don't hesitate to use seemingly complex words – if your child is interested, they will ask questions (over and over!). This repeated exposure is incredibly valuable; as you discuss a topic and its vocabulary, both your child's understanding and their vocabulary will flourish. This approach is inspired by Montessori principles, encouraging accurate terminology early on, fostering a strong foundation for expression.
Missing Words: On rare occasions, a suitable word simply can't be found for a letter. In these cases, we will still include a colouring page for that letter. The letter will be printed, but a word and example sentence will not be included. This keeps the alphabet complete!
Language Tweaks: Although we work hard to ensure accurate spelling and terminology, sometimes English or anglicized terms might slip through (like "Brachiosaurus" instead of "brahiozaur" in a Romanian book). We are continuously improving language accuracy. Your patience is appreciated!
Good Things Take Time! Our system generates word-sound associations and corresponding images for every letter in your chosen alphabet. This process typically takes 5 to 15 minutes. In some cases, especially during periods of high demand, generation may take longer, potentially up to 5 hours. We appreciate your patience!
Where to Find Your Book: Once your colouring book is ready (and successful!), it will be available for download in the "Tool Usage" section of your My Account page.
You will only be charged if the process is successful.
A full history of your colouring book creations, including any failed attempts, is available on your My Account page.
Responsible Use
Respectful Use is Key: This tool is intended for positive and educational use. Please be mindful and avoid submitting themes that are overtly inappropriate, harmful, or offensive. Our system is designed to automatically detect and prevent the generation of content that violates these guidelines.
Understanding Context: We recognize that language can be complex, and sometimes themes might have unintended interpretations. To ensure the safety and appropriateness of the colouring books, our system may rephrase or augment your inputted theme.
Sensitive Topics: We are particularly cautious when dealing with potentially sensitive subjects. While topics like body safety and sexual education are incredibly important, this tool is not designed to provide accurate or comprehensive illustrations for such complex themes. In these instances, we will likely adjust the theme to focus on general well-being, positivity, and safe interactions in more general settings.
REVIEW FIRST! ALWAYS! We use a combination of tools and processes to create your custom colouring book, including generative AI technology. While we have implemented safeguards and checks to minimize inaccurate or inappropriate content, always review the final output before sharing the book with children.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q: Why are the letters not in alphabetical order?
A: We draw from Montessori principles and present letters in the order in which they are encountered in the story generated for the colouring book, not in strict alphabetical order. This approach helps connect the visual of the letter with its sound and context within the narrative, making it a more integrated learning experience. You can read the story (found on Sheet 2, the parent guide) with your child while looking at the corresponding images in the colouring pages.
Q: How are the words chosen for each letter?
A: The system first generates a short, theme-related story rich in vocabulary. Words for each letter are primarily chosen from this story. If a letter's sound isn't represented in the story, the system will try to use common words and integrate those into the theme via an example sentence. We prioritize words where the target sound is at the beginning, but sometimes it might be at the end. The goal is to associate the letter sound with a relevant image and word.
Q: Why do some letters have no associated words or images on their page?
A: On rare occasions, a suitable word simply can't be found for a letter. In these instances, to keep the alphabet complete, we will still include a colouring page for that letter. The letter itself will be there to trace, but there won't be an associated word, example sentence, or specific image beyond a generic placeholder if applicable.
Q: Why are some (parts of) images already coloured in, or why is there text in the images?
A: The images are generated by AI. Sometimes, the AI interprets the request in a way that leads to partially coloured images or includes textual elements within the illustration itself. We are constantly working to improve the image generation process to minimize these occurrences and ensure clear, uncoloured line art suitable for colouring. Occasionally, gibberish or English text might also appear in images for non-English books; this is a known issue we are addressing.
Q: Is this colouring book like the ones I buy in a store?
A: Not exactly. While it provides pages for colouring, this book is dynamically generated based on your chosen theme and language. Key differences include:
- Story-based letter ordering: Letters follow their appearance in a generated story, not alphabetical order.
- AI-generated images: Illustrations are created by AI, which can sometimes lead to unique or quirky results (see below).
- Focus on themed vocabulary: It's designed as a learning tool, emphasizing letter sounds and vocabulary within a theme.
- Parent guide: It includes a story and word list to help you engage with your child.
Q: Why is there a story? I just wanted colouring pages.
A: The story is a core part of how the colouring book is created! It serves multiple purposes:
- It provides the primary source of themed vocabulary from which we select words for each letter.
- It creates a narrative context, making the learning process more engaging for children.
- It offers you, the parent or educator, a starting point for discussions related to the theme and vocabulary.
Q: The images sometimes look a bit strange or have funny errors. Why is that?
A: Our images are generated by Artificial Intelligence. While AI is powerful, it's not perfect and can sometimes produce unexpected or humorous results – like an animal with extra limbs or objects in odd places. We encourage you to see these as "teachable moments." You can discuss the quirkiness with your child, laugh about it, and even colour over the errors. However, always review the book before giving it to a child to ensure all content is appropriate.
Q: Why does it take so long (30+ minutes) to generate the book?
A: Creating a custom colouring book involves several complex steps: generating a unique story based on your theme, identifying suitable words for each letter of the alphabet in your chosen language, and then generating a unique image for each of those words. This entire process, especially the image generation for every letter, is computationally intensive and typically takes 5 to 15 minutes. During peak times, it could take longer.
Q: What if I find a page inappropriate or don't like some of the images/words?
A: We strongly encourage you to review all pages before giving the book to a child. If you find any content unsuitable, please remove those pages. We also ask that you email us at heretohelp@linguwhee.com with details of the problematic pages (theme, language, letter, word/image concern). Your feedback is invaluable in helping us refine our AI and content filters.
Q: Can I choose the specific words or images for each letter?
A: Currently, the system automatically selects words based on the generated story and theme, and then generates images for those words. There isn't an option for users to manually pick or change specific words or images for individual letters. The process is designed to be largely automated to create a cohesive, themed experience.
Q: I selected a non-English language, but I see some English words or the spelling seems off. Why?
A: While we strive for accuracy in all supported languages, sometimes English terms or anglicized versions of words might appear (e.g., "Brachiosaurus" instead of the Romanian "brahiozaur"). This can also happen with spelling. Our language models are continuously being improved to enhance accuracy and reduce such instances. We appreciate your patience and any feedback you can provide on specific errors helps us.
